Dame Fanny Dugard Powles (Lady Hewitt) on the balcony at the Hoe, Lynton, Devon
Barrister Thomas Hewitt's first wife died in 1865 following the
death of their only child Winifred.
In 1869 he married a first cousin Fanny Dugard when
she was only 18 years old and he was 32.
The marriage took place at Eversley Parish Church in Hampshireand was conducted by Fanny's half uncle theRev. Richard Cowley Powles and witnessed by her eldest brother John Fleetwood and Mary Powles (the wife of Richard Cowley).
The ceremony was performed by Canon Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies.
