In 1869 he married a first cousin Fanny Dugard when she was only 18 years old and he was 32. The marriage took place at Eversley Parish Church in Hampshireand was conducted by Fanny's half uncle theRev. Richard Cowley Powles and witnessed by her eldest brother John Fleetwood and Mary Powles (the wife of Richard Cowley).
